Emma

This could not be happening.

I refused to believe it.

I opened up the DateMe app and looked at Lionheart’s profile again, stared at the photo of Michael attached to it. Was this some kind of joke? Had I been tricked into talking to him? Had he somehow known all along, or…?

“It can’t be a coincidence,” I said out loud. Or is it?

We’d been matched according to our profile questionnaire. To our answers. And that was supposed to mean we were a good match as a couple?

“No, no, no, no. This is dumb. It’s not real. It’s just some dumb app, and it’s all a mistake,” I muttered, and shut off my phone. Knowing Michael, he’d be worried about this. He’d try to call and work it out with me, and that was the last thing I wanted right now.

Michael.

He’d said he was falling for this girl. This special woman he’d spent a lot of time with. And it didn’t take a genius to figure out who that special girl was. It was me. I was the one he was falling for, and that was exactly the opposite of what we’d agreed to.

We’d agreed that we would keep it casual, and if the heat ran out, that we’d call it and remain friends. How were we supposed to remain friends under these circumstances? Impossible. This was yet more proof that I had to leave.

My mind whirred, trying to make sense of the facts, of Michael, of how I felt.

Bottom line, I wasn’t ready for a relationship, and certainly not one that would see me lose my job, or make me be followed by people with cameras, or cause even more tension between Michael and George. They’d been friends first. And George didn’t seem stable right now. If he hurt someone or himself… Even though I wasn’t responsible for his actions, I would still feel some guilt over that.

“It’s too much.” My stomach sank.

The truth was in. I had to leave. I had to protect myself, and I would protect Michael in the process, even if it meant breaking my own heart.

And that’s exactly why you have to go. Before that heartbreak gets any worse. Because somewhere down the line, if you did get together, it would end. It always ends.

There were no real happy endings. Only in books and movies. It was all a crock.

A door slammed deeper in the apartment, and I tensed.

“Emma,” Michael called out.

Shit! He’d actually come home?

“Emma, we need to talk,” he said, his voice drawing closer to my shut door.

I sat on the edge of my bed, frozen. What was I supposed to say to him? After what he’d told me.

His fist rattled my door, and I exhaled, measuring my nerves, weighing them, trying to dismiss them.

“Emma.”

“What?”

“I’m coming in.”

At least this time he’d knocked.

The door opened, and Michael strode into the room, as gorgeous as ever, his tan brow wrinkled and his eyes taking me in as they always did. He ran a hand over his jaw, scratched the stubble there, and stopped just inside the room, staring at me.
